Thinking Out Loud: Teaching Clinical Reasoning

Clinical reasoning is often expected of learners before the thinking behind it has been made visible. Cognitive apprenticeship offers a practical way to bridge this gap: educators model how clinicians think, coach learners through authentic problems, provide purposeful scaffolding, and gradually support greater independence.

In this session, Dr. Goran Stevanovski, MD, MA, SFHEA, explores how these principles can be accounted for from the beginning of the academic year, and how virtual patient encounters create repeated opportunities for your learners to practise, articulate, and refine their clinical reasoning. Drawing on his work in health professions education and clinical reasoning, he will share practical strategies you can bring into your own teaching from day one.
