Teaching Management Reasoning: Helping Learners Move from Diagnosis to Action

Learn how educators can effectively teach management reasoning, the process by which learners translate diagnoses into safe, evidence-informed, and patient-centered management plans. While diagnostic reasoning is often emphasized in training, learners frequently struggle with deciding what to do next and why.

This session explores common gaps in how management reasoning is taught and assessed, and provides practical, adaptable strategies for incorporating management reasoning instruction across the didactic and clinical phases of health professions education.

Participants will gain insights into teaching learners to:

  • Develop coherent management plans aligned with clinical goals
  • Integrate guidelines, clinical judgment, and patient context
  • Anticipate risks, tradeoffs, and downstream consequences of decisions
  • Use reflection and feedback to strengthen management reasoning skills
