Evaluating Hands-On Physical Skills in Health Professions Education

In this webinar, Dr. Sheldon Yao, DO, shares practical, discipline-agnostic strategies for evaluating hands-on physical skills across undergraduate and graduate medical and advanced practice education. Using OMM as a detailed example, Dr. Yao demonstrates how structured, competency-based assessment approaches can be applied broadly to physical examination, clinical skills labs, and supervised clinical experiences.

Participants will explore how to design assessments that are reliable, defensible, and aligned with clinical performance expectations. The session addresses common faculty challenges, including inter-rater variability, time constraints, and meaningful feedback, and highlights how technology-enabled tools can support scalable assessment without increasing instructional burden.

This session is designed for educators responsible for teaching and assessing physical skills across the continuum of medical and advanced practice education.
